Book Illustration: Farmer Tuy's Challenge

One morning, the villagers discover strange things going on in their community. Following the creek together, they find the source of their problems and on their way learn more about pesticides.

I wrote and illustrated this book as a consultant for Comité de Coopération avec le Laos (CCL, a French non-governmental organization) and Sustainable Agriculture & Environment Development Association (SAEDA, a Lao non-profit organization). They both work in the fields of sustainable livelihoods, food security and agriculture, and environment within rural communities of Laos. We developed this children's book following a participatory approach. In two workshops, with participation of local authorities, key messages were defined and sorted by their importance, title ideas were discussed and a strategy about the implementation of the book within the project frame of the participating organizations was developed.

The book presents and easy to follow story of 4 main characters in a typical Lao village. Next to the story, children learn important facts about synthetical pesticides: What are pesticides? Why can they be harmful for humans and animals? What is protective equipment? What precautions need to be taken when using pesticides? How does the waste management of pesticide containers look like? What alternatives exist to synthetical pesticides? What support can farmers get if they have questions? Ect. This story includes several "Activity pages" that encourage the listeners to either interact in a discussion, play a game or do an activity to further deepen their knowledge, which also makes it easy to use in groups. At the end of the book there's an overview of the main Do's and Don'ts and an overview of the pesticide cycle in the natural environment. Primary target group of the book are children and teenagers (10-15 years), with young adults, relatives and parents as a secondary target group.

Today, the book is already in use in the project activities of the involved organizations. The book is being published under a creative commons licence: Attribution - Non-Commercial - ShareAlike. If you are interested to reprint it for your organization, please get in touch.
