China: Winter in Shangri-La

China: Winter in Shangri-La

Shangrila is a place steeped in history, in close vicinity to Tibet. The winters are bitter cold here – we already notice it in November. However, you shouldn't miss this time here: in winter everything runs a bit slower, the atmosphere is relaxed and you enjoy every sunray double.

Apparently Zhongdian is the city of "Shangrila", which is described in James Hilton's book "Lost Horizon".

Originally, the small town in the north of Yunnan Province was called "Zhongdian" (Chinese) or "Gyalthang" (Tibetan). In 2001, however, this name was changed to boost tourism: Apparently Zhongdian is the city of "Shangrila", which is described in James Hilton's book "Lost Horizon". The strategy works: Today, Shangrila is a popular place for domestic and foreign tourists. Fortunately, winter does not seem to be a popular travel month and the city is much quieter than in summer. Equipped with a jacket, scarf and warm hiking shoes, we roam the old town of Shangrila, which is not too big but still worth seeing. Clouds of smoke hang in the streets and the late sun rays spread a diffuse light. On the square in the middle of the old town, meat and vegetable kebabs are offered, which are grilled directly on a small wood stove. You can also catch the last warm sunrays of the day here.

As soon as the sun disappears, it will inevitably get cold. We take refuge in a restaurant and dare to try the local specialties: yak meat, Tibetan homemade noodles and butter tea. Everything tastes very good and soon the warmth returns to us from the inside.

The next day we get an overview of the old and the new city of Shangrila from a small hill on which there is also a 10m high golden prayer wheel. The old town houses are richly decorated with intricate carvings and paintings. They have usually little to no insulation and are heated exclusively with wood. The cold also comes into our room in the guesthouse and it is difficult to leave the warm duvet behind in the morning. Hot Chinese jiaozi (dumplings filled with meat and vegetables) with a spicy sauce help a lot in this situation.

We will remember the few days of winter fondly, this beautiful atmosphere and the pleasant warmth of tea in our guts, but now we are also looking forward to traveling to warmer regions soon. The next destination is Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province with 6 million inhabitants. Conveniently, this city is also called "City of Eternal Spring".
