London: Unser britischer Sommer beginnt

London: The Beginning of our british Summer

The moving boxes are filling up, the apartment is getting emptier and emptier. The fingers are soaked with the cleaning water, and memories of the past years living in this apartment flash up again and again between the stains that we clean. And then we sit there one evening, at the improvised table, our voices echo in the room and we know that tomorrow is the day.

But let's start with the facts. The plan is, that we will spend 2 months in England to improve our English. At the beginning of October we will return briefly to Switzerland before we move to Laos for an indefinite period of time on October 12th. We want to document the way there again on our blog the way we did with our past travels.

We travel to England via 3 capitals: Breakfast in Bern, Lunch in Paris, Dinner in London.

After we have cleared our apartment - which we can sublet to a good friend for the time being - the adventure begins on Wednesday morning. We travel to England via 3 capitals: Breakfast in Bern, Lunch in Paris, Dinner in London. We enjoy being able to make the trip over land (or under water) with the TGV / Eurostar. We have never been to England before and are therefore both very excited when the train arrives in London in the evening. The uncomplicated public transport system will often impress us over the next few days. It’s easy to understand even in a somewhat tired state after a long journey. We find our place to stay in the Whitechapel working-class district without any problems.

The first morning in a new city – this is always new and exciting. In the Harvard Library we catch up on what has been neglected in the last few days that were so filled out with packing boxes: over coffee, we find out where we actually ended up here.

Over the next two days, many memories of former English lessons come to mind: Tower Bridge, Westminster Palace, Big Ben, the Thames, Hyde Park and the ubiquitous red double-decker busses – we’ve seen it all before, but in reality it’s just something else. We are particularly impressed by the Tate Museum, where you could spend days alone strolling around and admiring the art work.

After these rather touristic activities, we meet up with two friends that we know from our last trip through the Americas. Back then, we spent time together on the ship between Panama and Colombia and have already met up once again after that in Lima. They live just south of London and show us their favorite places of the city for the next two days. So we stroll along the idyllic canals, always making culinary stops in various food markets or in cozy cafes. We have a lot to tell each other and there is almost no time to exchange everything. We meet half of their families in the cheerful house of their parents and are immediately very well integrated. We are very moved by the enormous hospitality. There, we can also visit their camper van, with which they plan their next upcoming trip.

The time passes way too fast and we have to say goodbye. But we are pretty sure that this was not the last time that we’ve seen those two. Lima, London - Laos?

On Monday we are back on the train. This time, it takes us to the south of England, to Cornwall. You will find out what is waiting for us there in the next blog post.
