Ein ereignisreiches, spezielles Jahr geht zu Ende. Wir blicken dankbar zurück, dass wir weitgehend verschont blieben von der Pandemie und ihren Auswirkungen, und warten auf ein Jahr, in dem es hoffentlich für den Tourismus in Laos wieder bergauf geht.
Nach wie vor ist Laos grösstenteils Covid-frei, mit Ausnahme von einigen wenigen Fällen, die in Quarantäne nach (strikt regulierten) Grenzübertritten aufgetreten sind. Bis zum heutigen Tag gab es offiziell nur 41 Infizierte, keine Todesfälle. Das Leben läuft hier also mehr oder weniger «normal» weiter, sofern man das in einer Stadt sagen kann, die praktisch vom Tourismus lebt. Glücklicherweise hat der nationale Tourismus ein wenig zugenommen, sodass wenigstens ab und zu laotische Touristen aus der Hauptstadt den Weg nach Luang Prabang finden. Die Hotels, Restaurants und Shops geben ihr bestes, mit aussergewöhnlichen Events und Aktivitäten attraktiv zu bleiben. In der Folge gibt es momentan praktisch jedes Wochenende einen Markt, dazu verschiedene kulturelle Anlässe.
Auch im wunderschönen Garten von Ock Pop Tok, wo Simon arbeitet, findet eine "Village Weaver Fair" statt, für welche verschiedene ethnische Gruppen aus den Bergregionen von Laos eingeladen werden, ihre Produkte zu präsentieren. Der farbenfrohe Markt mit aussergewöhnlichen Textilien und die Streetfoodstände ziehen viele Leute an. Joséphine ist mit einem kleinen Stand präsent und kann einige ihrer Pangolin Bücher verkaufen und Werbung für das Sensibilisierungsposter zum Thema «Konsum von Wildtieren» machen, welches letzten Herbst in Kooperation mit Association Anoulak entstanden ist.
Mit dem Winter fängt die kalte Saison in Laos an. Schöne, klare Morgenluft lädt zum draussen Sitzen ein, mit Schal und Socken, bis die Sonne über die Mauer kriecht und die Wärme in die Glieder zurückkehrt. Die Kälte bringt auch etwas Vorweihnachts-Stimmung mit sich, sowie einige Back-Projekte mit Freundinnen. Wir beschliessen, dieses Jahr Weihnachten für unsere Verhältnisse etwas «grösser» zu feiern und laden einige Freunde ein. Im Garten verbringen wir ein schönes, ausgelassenes Fest – 6 Nationen an einem Tisch.
Wir schauen dankbar zurück auf ein Jahr, in dem wir trotz Pandemie unsere Jobs behalten konnten und ein «normales» Leben möglich war, während viele andere – auch in der Schweiz – eine harte Zeit durchmachen mussten. Wir hoffen, dass sich im neuen Jahr die Lage stabilisiert und wir bald wieder Menschen aus aller Welt in Luang Prabang begrüssen können – vielleicht auch Dich?
An eventful, special year is coming to an end. We are very grateful that we were largely spared from the pandemic and its effects, and we are waiting for a year in which, hopefully, tourism in Laos will pick up again.
As before, Laos is largely Covid-free, with the exception of a few cases that occurred in quarantine after (strictly regulated) border crossings. To date there have only been officially 41 infected people, no deaths. So life here goes on more or less «normally», if at all you can say that in a city that practically lives from tourism. Fortunately, national tourism has increased a little, so that at least now and then Lao tourists from the capital find their way to Luang Prabang. The hotels, restaurants and shops do their best to stay attractive with exceptional events and activities. As a result, there is currently a market practically every weekend, plus various cultural events.
Also in the beautiful garden of Ock Pop Tok, where Simon works, there is a "Village Weaver Fair" during one weekend in December, for which different ethnic groups from the mountain regions of Laos are invited to present their products. The colorful market with unusual textiles and the street food stalls attract a lot of people. Joséphine has a small stand and can sell some of her Pangolin books and advertise the awareness-raising poster on the subject of “Health Risks of Wildlife Consumption”, which was created last autumn in cooperation with Association Anoulak.
The cold season in Laos begins with winter. The beautiful, clear morning air invites us to sit outside, wearing a scarf and socks, until the sun creeps over the wall and the warmth returns to our limbs. The cold also brings some pre-Christmas mood, as well as some baking projects with friends. We decide to celebrate Christmas a little "bigger" for our standards this year and invite some friends. In the garden we have a nice, happy party - 6 nations around one table.
We look back gratefully on a year in which we were able to keep our jobs despite the pandemic and a “normal” life was possible, while many others – also in Switzerland - had to go through a rough time. We hope that the situation will stabilize in the new year and that we will soon be able to welcome people from all over the world in Luang Prabang again - maybe you too?
