Warten auf den Regen

Waiting for the Rain

Pi Mai (Lao New Year) is followed by the hottest time of the year. Temperatures barely drop below 30 degrees during the day and night - and this year the heat drags on for an unnecessarily long time. But since we're both pretty busy, time flies anyway..

At the beginning of May, Joséphine takes a trip to Vientiane to stamp the work visa at the border for another year. She enjoys a few days in the capital and also has time for sightseeing. It is interesting how we like the capital a little more with every visit. On our very first visit 8 years ago, we did not feel comfortable at all, but now that we know the city better, we are recognizing its charms more and more.

The city's “Fire Trees” bloom with bright orange blossoms, the “Golden Rain” in bright yellow and the white frangipani trees with their perfect white blossoms (the national flower of Laos) show their splendor for weeks.

As usual, May is a very hot month. Sometimes the thermometer rises to 40 degrees, and it never really rains. We get used to it a bit, but the Laotians also tell us that it hasn't been that hot for a long time. But the heat also has nice sides. The city's “Fire Trees” bloom with bright orange blossoms, the “Golden Rain” in bright yellow and the white frangipani trees with their perfect white blossoms (the national flower of Laos) show their splendor for weeks. The bougainvilleas in our garden are instoppable. Then one day out of nowhere: rain. But the joy is short and the tropical storm is over quickly. Still, the few drops were very welcome and from then on, it eventually does rain from time to time. But the real rainy season is still a long way off, even though it would have officially started with Boun Khao Phansa (the beginning of the 3-month retreat of the monks into the Wats on July 16). The Khan River, which flows here into the Mekong, has a lower water level than it has had for a long time and the bamboo bridge, which is usually washed away in July, is still standing (but is becoming more and more adventurous to cross!).

Time is very busy for us. Simon has settled in well with Ock Pop Tok and is currently able to set up a new website among other tasks. As there is some personell change too, there’s a lot of work - and next to that, there are some parties, an open day at Ock Pop Tok and the farewell of a colleague who is moving back to the USA. In addition, more and more hotels and restaurants are interested in Simon’s offer in the area of internet installation and network. Josephine is also busy with her freelance work, in addition to the two days she works for a hotel in the area of social media and graphics / website. At the beginning of May, she received confirmation from three different organizations who would like to publish her children's book «Pangolin – Life of a scaly anteater» in an English-Lao version. There is still a lot of work to do before publication, but now - at the end of July - the print version is almost complete and the book will soon be printed with an edition of around 3000-4000 copies. The majority of the books are used by the publishing organizations for their environmental and animal protection projects in the north of Laos, another part goes to an organization that looks after 800 libraries across Laos, the rest are available for sale in Luang Prabang and Vientiane. A very exciting process that was motivating and very educational! In addition, she works on around 10 graphic design projects for various organizations, from flyers, illustrated city maps, websites, birth announcement cards, brochures and photo shoots to a short film. And as a gift for the opening of the new cat house of the “Rescue House Luang Prabang”, where our two cats come from, she also paints a mural.

We are so happy that we can do what makes us happy here. It is also nice to be able to spend a lot of time together despite the work; having a coffee in the garden together in the morning, meeting each other at home or in the city at lunchtime and cooking something together in the evening or sometimes with friends or eating out in one of the numerous restaurants every now and then - it's nice to be so close to each other in daily life. In all of this it also helps that we feel extremely comfortable in the place where we live. Joséphine enjoys gardening and occasionally building some stuff; sometimes the curious neighbors kids come and help with painting, other times the older neighbor helps her build a bamboo grid for the climbing plants.

Now we hope for some rain for our last month in Laos before we go on vacation to Switzerland for almost a month. We hope to see many of you there! See you soon!
